Eames Chair
I love Adobe Illustrator. As well as being one of the primary tools for my commercial work as a graphic designer, I still play around with it for my own amusement. I know, I should get out more. This is the first of a series of illustrations of classic mid-century design objects entirely created using vector software.
For those of you unfamiliar with this, vector images are made up of many individual, scalable objects. These objects are defined by mathematical equations rather than pixels, so they always render at the highest quality. Objects may consist of lines, curves, and shapes with editable attributes such as color, fill, and outline. Because they are scalable, vector images are resolution independent. You can increase and decrease the size of vector images to any degree and the lines will remain crisp and sharp, both on screen and in print.
Eames Van der Beek
Often times while watching a movie on my 17-inch TV/VCR combo from 1999, I fantasize about buying a huge flatscreen and mounting it above my fireplace. While being able to read subtitles or enjoying Marion Cotillard in high definition would be great, if I saved that $1,000, I did be 1/5 on my way to an Eames Lounge Chair.

From the Wishlist | 2. Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman
The Eames Lounge chair has long been a favorite of mine. It manages to do the rare job of both looking very good and being as comfortable as they come. I was delighted to learn recently that the genesis of the idea for this chair involved not only one of my favorite designers, Charles and Ray Eames, but also my favorite filmmaker of all time, Billy Wilder.
Once, while visiting Wilder at his movie set, the Eames duo noticed that Wilder was using makeshift chairs and ottomans to catch a quick nap between shoots. This gave the Eames the idea to come up with a chair and ottoman design that would be both simple and curvaceous. They wanted the chair to have a warm, undesigny look with the inviting, comfortable appeal of a worn-out baseball mitt. Introduced amidst much fanfare in 1956, on NBC s “Home,” hosted by Arlene Francis, the introductory video for the chair and ottoman can be viewed here and among other things, it takes through the entire process to assemble the chair.
The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are not rich and luxurious in appearance, neither do they fall into the trap of being good-looking but uncomfortable. Combined with its curved shape, and moulded plywood and leather body that gives it a slight flex, the chair s relatively small size, enough only to accommodate a comfortable backrest and no more, leaves one with the feeling of being hugged and comforted.

Identifying Vintage Eames LCM Chairs
Over the weekend I found a pair of Eames aniline LCM (Lounge Chairs Metal) in the wild. I had truly given up hope of finding any more vintage Eames LCW or LCMs out in the wilds of used furniture shops and flea-markets. They are such iconic chairs, and far fewer of the Eames plywood chairs were made than say, the fiberglass Eames shell chairs, that I figured I would have to pony up at an auction or go to a dealer if I wanted any more.
Yet low and behold we found a pair of the
black LCMs at a wonderful vintage/junk/estate
sale store which I regularly drive over an hour to check out.
It is packed to the rafters with odds and ends,
and you never know what you will find if
you have a few hours to dig. My favorite kind of store.
When found them the backs of the chairs had
been glued on upside down (since corrected).
